Agenda for Thursday 3/29/07
If you ever thought about attending a city council meeting but were turned off by the thought of a meeting that ran four hours, then Thursday night is your night. The agenda has been posted and it is the shortest agenda for a regular meeting in recent history, maybe all history.
There are two agenda items. The first is the "Mayor's Award." I think this is a new award category. I don't have any information on it.
The second item is to affirm that the gas company has the authority to enter into gas contracts on behalf of the city. This is actually an interesting item. SWTMG has been offered a deal to lock in prices if they sign a ten year contract. Reports from some who have looked into it say that we might be locking into a price structure that may not be beneficial. It is a confusing topic that deserves careful consideration.

UPDATE: The contract is not for ten years, it is for twenty years! The gas company wants to lock in a guaranteed supply. It is not clear that members of the gas board has read the entire contract. Nobody on the Alpine or Marfa council has received a copy of the contract. It appears that it may not be easy to get out of thhe contract. Some people feel like we are being rushed into a bad deal. The gas board approved the contract last Wednesday. The gas seller is insiting that the gas board get the cities to affirm that the gas board has the right to enter this type of contracts.
Melvin Davis wants to guarantee gas availability. They refuse to let people have a copy of the contract. No independent attorney has been hired to review the contract. Marfa should not approve this contradt until an independent expert oil and gas attorney has reviewed the 50 page contract and provided a summary of the advantages and risks.

According to what I have read on the Water Development website regarding the 1.25 million loan, the city has 30 days from the time the loan was approved by the Board, which was Feb. 28, to accept or refuse the loan. That would be tomorrow. I may be wrong of course.
Accept. Accepted by Council? Notice of acceptance by Council to the water devel people? Does this count as 'cutting it close'?
I hear Mayor's Award will be EMS and VFD. Lest you all forget, Jesse Pena/EMS CoDirector and Gary Mitschke, Fire Chief, have openly supported Flo at several City Council meetings. The only people other than Dan Petrosky, Gloria Rivera, and Oscar Martinez...and Lanman, to do so.
Water loan will be questioned tomorrow night.
