One of the clearest speakers at the July 27, 2006 meeting was MaryLou Martinez. She spoke respectfully of citizen concerns. Unfortunately, the mayor could not even look her in the eye. Such a shame. You can watch his response as she makes her statement in this video.

Although British historian Lord Acton issued his epic warning, “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely” in the late nineteenth century, citizens of Marfa can attest to the veracity of Acton’s words right here and now.
Whatever has happened to the “old” David Lanman---you know, the likeable guy with the winsome smile—the one who was able to charm at least thirty more voters than city council veteran, Dan Petrosky?
He is gone---only to be regretfully replaced by someone who daily can claim fewer and fewer friends, someone who wears a grimace on his face when he is not scowling or frowning, someone who refuses to hear the voices of his old friends and constituents, and above all, someone who thinks he is the king of Marfa.
Where did he go? Unfortunately, it is no mystery. He hasn’t been snatched by aliens nor transformed by the Marfa Lights. The David Lanman we used to know and respect has sadly gone the way of absolute power and its highly corruptive nature.
