Hoo-doo-doo Hits the Fan
Take a look at today's Big Bend Sentinel. It seems that all hell is about to break loose over at city hall; full on municipal melt down with the mayor blaming everybody he knows for the city's troubles. Two council members are in the spotlight; one for selling guns to the city, the other for moving away from the city. Lanman is both for and against vacation sales on page 4.
I am happy to see more life in the Sentinel editorial coverage. Their steady and accurate coverage of city business has been invaluable but has left an opening for analysis and opinion. Newspapers serve the community well by providing editorial comment on the news as well as the factual news itself. This blog has also tried to fill that gap. Without analysis, it is difficult to understand the big picture. Readers are left to connect the dots on their own. Readers are free to reject these opinions and state their own, either in letters to the editor or comments on this blog.
Free speech through citizen involvement, a free and independent press and healthy debate is a cornerstone of our society and encourages good government. I have lots to say about the hoodoo in today's Sentinel. I'll get to it later. Feel free to share your comments here in the meantime.

Governor Anne Richards' comment, "____can't help it, he has a silver boot in his mouth," comes to mind regarding the Mayor's comments in today's BBS. I hope I can wait for Rob's sensible, concise analysis of this amalgam of selfserving pap before I break out on a tangent or nine.
"Unprofessional" is a word that frequently comes to mind regarding the Mayor. His remark about the Youth Club and the arrests of 13 students is totally inappropriate, insensitive, and irresponsible. The Mayor proclaimed "The condition of the MAC building is "shameful" and the city still is falling short of addressing the needs of the city's youth, he said, referring to the recent break-in at the high shool library. No wonder, he said, the Marfa Youth Club space at the MAC is depressing." The Mayor, the head of the city, has said that it was okay to break into the school because the Youth Club was depressing? Being a famous disbeliever in rules, as he has proven time and again, this is not a surprising statement. But by making it, he has demeaned the school administration, the police department, and ultimately the county court.
