Agenda for Thursday 2/22/07
The agenda for Thursday's city council meeting has been posted. There are presentations about Marfa's web site, P&Z and BoA. The first item considers a house bill from Pete Gallego. The second is to call the election in May. Now this is exciting!
The mayor's seat is up for grabs. Two regular 2-year council seats are up (Martinez and Rivera). One 1-year special election seat is up for grabs (Petrosky's appointed seat for Lupe Devine). This is interesting because there are separate elections for the 2-year seats and the 1-year seat. There were three spots open at the last election and the top three vote getters got the seats (Williams, Salgado and Devine). Rivera was fourth and lost, but was appointed to fill Lorina Chavez's seat when she left council. So there is an election for the 2-year seats. The third place winner of that election gets nothing. The 1-year seat is a separate race. If anybody wants to dip their toes in city politics but afraid of a 2-year commitment, this is the perfect opportunity! Only 23 council meetings to attend plus the odd special meeting. What fun! Don't you want to give it a try? Contact Lori or Laura at city hall for a packet. We need a few good people to run for office and serve Marfa.
There are no applications to be on the ballot yet. It is wide open. The deadline is Monday, March 12. Rumor has it that Oscar Martinez might take another shot at the Mayor's office (that's not literal, so no lawsuits from city hall please). He hasn't confirmed that he is even running yet, but he has been handing out pens with his name and home phone number and his official slogan, "Don't call this number." Lanman says he is not running. My guess is he will play it by ear and wait until the last minute. That's how we got him last time. He saw that nobody had put their name in and figured it would be a gimme. Then Petrosky put in his name but not his heart and he got beat.
Next up is the stamp machine followed by something about a $1.3M loan. As is usual, Sauceda has written an official sounding agenda item that says nothing. Just his style. Officious and empty. Seriously, it is an agenda action item but does not state the action to be considered. This is bad housekeeping when it comes to agendas. TOMA says agendas must clearly state the business. Except in Marfa. Sauceda is pushing to borrow $1.3M (without having a comptroller in place!) and he refuses to tell citizens what they will discuss at the meeting. Watch your wallets. The last business item is the expenditures report.
Citizen comments follow. Only those quick on the draw can speak if they can beat the mayor's gavel. Fastest gavel west of Alamito Creek and east of Mimms Draw.

For the record, Flo arrived at work after lunch Tuesday after a three-day weekend. Way to go council. You really talked some sense into him. Great idea: give him a contract and hope he will get better. Promises, promises. Thanks from a concerned citizen for looking out for Marfa's interests.
The Mayor will be in Austin Thursday talking "water issues" with the Water Development Board. He won't be at the council meeting. Picture this: another Lanman preapproved move. He goes to the Water Development Board and talks about the loan BEFORE it has been discussed by council. It's happened before.

The mayor has told people he won't be at tomorrow's meeting because he is going to Austin tomorrow to discuss "water issues." I have checked the TWDB website. The city of Marfa's loan application for $1.45 million is on the agenda for approval on Feb. 27th which is next Tuesday. According to sources, City Hall is saying the TWDB loan is on the agenda just to get approval for the Mayor to travel down to Austin. Why is he going on Thursday if the meeting isn't until Tuesday??? Another weekend interlude on City funds with the girl friend??? Or is he going to try to talk to Pete Gallego about HB 546 when Pete's office has already replied to the city about its stand.
More on the Austin trip. Come to find out, nobody knows where the Mayor is. Flo says they are going to Austin on Monday to "talk about the loan." I know he has said he would not be at the council meeting because he was going to Austin to talk about "water issues." Where he really is...keep your eyes open for a mayor sighting.
Mayor is on a "secret" mission. We aren't supposed to know he is gone.
Aha! He can run but he can't hide! The Blog has tracked the Mayor down. He is in Austin at some architect's office. Probably lining up more professionals for the loan...We already have a bond legal firm, an engineering firm, our regular Monte Akers. and a financial consultant.
